The White House Billy Millar aka Stephen Boyd was born just a few hundred yards from a historic place called the White House. Historian Bob Armstrong has corrected me on Stephen's place of birth as being Doagh Road, at Whitehouse with a birth certificate to prove it.
The building the White House is an actual house built in the 16th century and can be traced back to events surrounding some of the world's most famous humans such as George Washington and Queen Elizabeth I. In the above picture you can see the house in the background. I visited the house on my trip to Northern Ireland and was really impressed by how a lot of it is still standing thanks to the Abbey Historical Society. They are doing surveys and studies and it must be an archeologists dream to be part of this restoration, so whoever is interested in history must be nuts to not want to become a part of this and support it! The location of the house is impressive, strategic and very scenic in spite of modern day construction interference. If you walk the surrounding area you get a great feel for the grandeur and historical importance of the house. William of Orange (in Dutch Willem van Oranje) landed here and if you have are a historian or just amateur hobbyist and you have any information to add to the history concerning William of Orange in Northern Ireland then please contact the White House as they are always in search of more historical facts.
This is what the landmark looks like now:
The White House is in the process of being restored as part of a project by the Abbey Historical Society in Northern Ireland. It's aim is to create a cross-community cultural center that will serve as a meeting place for both sides in Northern Ireland. It will educate the children about their cultural heritage and it is an overall fantastic historical and cultural venture. Here is the other good news: It is the plan to make a exhibition of Stephen Boyd's work and career within The White House as soon as it is fully restored!!!! You can help! You can write letters to The White House (or emails) expressing your support and you can even make financial contributions to this non-profit cause, if you wish to not only keep the memory of the actor alive, but assist in creating a landmark cultural center that will promote the Irish heritage in the performing and visual arts. Every little thing helps. So, please follow this link to and by all means give them some feedback too!
