I just watched Mr. Boyd in the movie Jumbo with Doris Day.  I especially remember him in the film Ben Hur.  Watching him again rekindled my appreciation of him as an actor.

Like so many before me who have expressed their gratitude for your extensive website, I too join their ranks.

"The Best of Everything" and "Ben-Hur" have been favorites of mine since I saw them in the '60's when I was first dating.

Wondering if his wife is still alive? Did she remarry? What a shame he had no children. His sense of value and family with his Irish Heritage was extraordinary.

Thanks so much for your time and effort in maintaining this website.

Stephen Boyd also appeared with Leo McKern in Assignment K. Dame Judy Dench had a small part in The Third Secret. She works in an art gallery and has a brief encounter with Stephen Boyd. Hugh Griffith also appeared with Stephen Boyd at least once after Ben Hur, in the movie Lisa.

How wonderful to know that so many discerning movie fans(in the case of Stephen Boyd I'm pretty sure fan is for fantasize and not fanatic...)know what many critics have somehow missed. His presence on screen is,as many have pointed out, magical. Maybe, when the book is available, all of his movies will be out there.

Great web site. I just finished watching "The Best of Everything," which is a favorite of mine. What a compelling actor Stephen Boyd was. There are very few I find so mesmerizing. Didn't realize he died so young. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of him.

hamburg, 12-02-03 thank you so much for your great site abt stephen boyd!! I have my computer only a few days, and after all these years I found informations abt the man I loved when I was a young girl and saw ben hur the first time. (in 1960!)I never forgot my "first love", and I am really more than shocked to read that he died so long ago and so very young. Although my tears are still running I am so thankful for all the endeavours you took to arrange this site. thank you, brigitte, from germany!!! - monika

It was pleasing to see your site and learn a bit more about Stephen Boyd. Personally remember him mostly from "Ben Hur" and "Fall of the Roman Empire." Interesting that Stephen's BH co-star, the title character from that film, Charlton Heston was IIRC first offered the role of Livius by producer Samuel Bronston. He felt he had done enough "ancient epics" so turned it down, instead he did (the underrated IMO) "55 Days at Peking" which was also for Bronston. That opened up the FotRE lead for Stephen Boyd, which he of course accepted. Good that Boyd did the picture, some dislike(d) it though others were and are more favorable. For some reason, it wasn't even nominated (?!) for any set design awards yet Tiomkin's great music was noticed. Nominated for an Oscar in that category (lost to "Mary Poppins" of all movies) and actually won the scoring Golden Globe. So in that sense, and on video, it lives on. Also seem to recall that Kirk "Spartacus" Douglas was offered the part (and a lot of $$$) Christopher Plummer played, Bronston was still trying at that point for actors associated with epic leads. Kirk wanted instead to do a Cortez-Montezuma story with Bronston, that fell apart (Bronston likely running out of $$$ by then) and Plummer came in. Many have compared FotRE with "Gladiator," wonder if there was any official acknowledgement of the former by the those who did the latter, they're so very similar. And yet different, Russell Crowe was ok, have to say I much preferred Plummer's more complex Commodus vs. Joaquin Phoenix's histrionics. The endings were also sort of different. Probably not spoiling anything by noting that "Gladiator" tried for a sort of positive conclusion after Crowe got killed by having the eulogy for him. Stephen Boyd survived FotRE but with an otherwise more downbeat ending, great scene where he walked off in disgust as they were auctioning off the Empire. Well, I've talked about the one movie as opposed to Stephen Boyd's entire career, thanks anyway!

Martin Scorsese, in a recent documentary, had very good things to say about The Fall of the Roman Empire. To me, the love between two powerful, mature, duty bound people was wonderful. As played by Stephen Boyd, Livius was a Roman General who had nothing to prove to anyone. His bravery and skill were legendary. He served at the whim of Caesar. Ms. Loren also portrayed a mature woman who knew her duty, no matter what. Their scenes together are full of warmth and longing for what might have been.

Yes, he did die with all of the glamour that befitted a star. We were watching Ben Hur when my husband asked me to look him up on the computer because he heard of him for so long. We didn't realized he had died so young. He was truly a star and accomplished more than he could ever have dreamed of.

Whilst watching "Fall of The Roman Empire" my wife and I asked the question yet again. What happened to Stephen Boyd? This time we got on the computer to find out. We are very saddened by what we have just found out.....although we suspected he must have died as we had not seen or heard of him for ages. As I write this, the above film is on the telly so I will watch it once more with sadness. Thank you for a lovely web site

Thank you very much Madam, for that website built with reverance and respect for our beloved actor. I was 13, in 1964, when I saw Ben Hur and discoverd the actor who has been remaining my favourite movie star for that day. You have brought to me lots of information I never found about he in spite of research. The French TV mentionned the fact when he died but that was so fastly said and unexpected that I was not very shure of what I heard that famous evening. Thanks to you, and to the weblink established with the French website of this other Anne-Marie, his memery is enshured to live as long as we do. God Bless you, Madam.

I have just finished watching Ben Hur on network TV and, like on many earlier occasions I have watched it, found myself asking the question, "whatever happened to Stephen Boyd?" Ben Hur is such a powerful and moving story, and Stephen's performance is nothing short of awesome: I decided it was about time I researched into what became of this talented actor who commanded such screen presence, and why it was that his career never really blossomed from this role as one would have expected. I stumbled across your website and some of those answers have been answered. I was greatly saddened to learn of his premature passing. Thanks for all the hard work that you and your contributors have done in establishing and maintaining this website: it is a fitting tribute to a talented man. Kind regards, Mike

Thank you for a wonderful site. I enjoyed all of the pictures, stories, articles, and information. I fell in love with Stephen Boyd when I first saw Ben-Hur as a young kid (my dad could never understand why I liked the "bad guy," and I never could explain that it was the humanness of the character that appealed so much, even back then. Stephen Boyd made Messala come alive in so many ways. I remember going to Travel Town in LA when I was a kid and they had Messala's chariot there. I could have stood there for hours. I've since gone back and have been told it was moved somewhere else. I was nine years old when he died, and I still remember how shocked I was when my mom read his obituary in the paper to me. I still watch for his movies, and they still make me smile. Thanks for a great site.

I really enjoyed Stephen Boyd's pursuit of Camila Sparv. He handled her gentle but firm rejection very well and was not detered and ofcourse won out in the end. The movie is Assignment K. While watching The Best Years of Our Lives, directed by William Wyler, I noticed something interesting. Early in the movie there is a scene where the returning war veteran stands at one end of a long hallway in his apartment. His wife walks out of a door at the other end of the long hall and stops as she sees him. His back is to the camera and he hesitates and then walks towards her. The scene is very reminiscent of the scene in Ben Hur when Messala and Juda Ben Hur are reunited after many years apart. Ben Hur is ofcourse another great William Wyler film.

This was very surprising to me as my grandfather David Boyd was from Belfast (although I thought the origin of the name 'Boyd' was Scottish meaning 'blonde haired'. I thought I had Lord Sephton in my ancestry and also Sir Rowland hill (inventor of the postage system), but now I'm wondering about Stephen Boyd???

Stephen Boyd's acting role in Ben-Hur was probably the best performance of all time. I enjoy all his movies and it is a great trajedy that he died so young.

I am a 33 years old Hungarian graphic designer, who lives in Canada. Ben-Hur is the biggest movie experience in my whole life. I have the movie in every format and kind. The original with the original voices, with hungarian voices, full screen, wide screen, everything. This is my "MOVIE" since I first wached at the age 12. Not just becasue this is a good movie, but brings Biblical message to everybody, to me. This is why I wached this move more than 500 times... Stephen Boyd become an iconic and emblematic actor for me. His face, acting, voice, movement, eyes is part of my life (just like Carlton Heston's too)... Great honor for the Great Actor. He is unforgetable... Best regards Peter Lukats

First saw Stephen in Ben Hur when I was a kid. Though he played a dislikable character in that film, I loved his performance and took interest in his career from then on. Too bad he left us so young. Rob

Hi again Brigitte! *zwaait vanuit Holland* As Monika Graefe also says at the beginning of this guestbook: Stephen Boyd was also my first "love" when I saw him as Messala when I was 6 years old. Unfortunately I never got to meet him, but it is really a thrill to see that there are so many others who remember him and love him! I still watch Ben Hur from time to time (usually 2 or 3 times a year at least) and luckily technology lets us see it on dvd in great quality. I will always remember Stephen and keep his memory alive. Anyone wanting to email me and have a chat about Stephen, please do :-) Looking forward to the book, Brigitte, although getting it in Holland will be a problem, as usual. Best wishes, Maaike

Just want to make sure you got my suggestion about posting Mr. Boyd's photo on the Internet Movie Data Base by the wonderful bio that you wrote. I would like to volunteer to take care of it.

Hi, I'm really pleased to have found your site. Like most folk, my early recollections of Stephen relate to his performances in 'Ben Hur' and 'The Fall of the Roman Empire' which I viewed at my now defunct local cinema in my home town of Nuneaton, near to Coventry, Warwickshire back in the late 1950's & early 1960's. I can inform you that Stephen actually made a number of visits to Nuneaton during the time that he performed live on stage with the Midland Theatre Company throughout 1953 & 1954. I have the theatre programme from December 1953 for the production of "Arabian Nights" where he portrayed both 'Ali Baba' and 'The Grand Vizier', both roles that, at that early stage in his career, gave some indication of his potential of becoming one of the greatest actors in the movie business. Unfortunately, I was too young at that time to anything about the production I can send you jpg attachments which I'm sure would enhance your already wonderful website. I look forward to hearing from you, Sincerely, Geoff Cooke

28 Dec 04 Superb website covering numerous aspects of a remarkably versatile actor. In life Mr.Boyd was clearly underappreciated professionally; however, your dedicated research and marvellous presentation provides a fitting tribute to a gentleman and consummate craftsman of dramatic arts. As one of Mr. Boyd's admirers, thank you for your most laudable efforts to make this re- source available to his public. Best regards, AC Armstrong, MD
